Abstract

Traffic congestion is one of the most significant and still unsolved problems of modern cities. Turning traffic flows further aggravate this problem. Channelizing vehicle traffic generally has a significant impact on road traffic. Complete reconstruction of road network sections to channelize traffic flows is not a flawless traffic management option. A relatively cheap way to channelize traffic is construction of turn lanes. Such lanes are characterized by a relatively shorter length compared to a full lane for motor vehicles. In order to achieve effective channelization of traffic flows, the turning traffic queue should be stored within the turning lane. This will reduce the influence of the turning traffic flow on the overall process of vehicle movement at the intersection. The aim of the presented research is to obtain a mathematical model describing the formation of motor vehicle queues approaching urban controlled intersections in turning directions. In the course of the study, the authors developed a hypothesis that the formation of vehicle queue length can be described by a two-factor linear additive model. Experimental studies, which were planned and conducted at more than 20 controlled intersections in different cities of the Russian Federation, confirmed the hypothesis. Ultimately, the authors of the study proposed a mathematical model that can be used to design new or adjust existing traffic light cycles at controlled intersections in cities.
